A great front page newspaper map that deals with the wranglings with the British over the Oregon territory. The small abstract of Heylin's map (1666) on the front page shows the island of California, which is shown to hold “Nova Albion”. The British used this as part of the argument to claim on the Oregon Territory since Sir Francis Drake indeed claimed the region long ago, in his circumnavigation of the globe in 1576, “thus, then, we find actual possession taken by England of this very coast before the United States had even a colonial existence”. And it was “regarded from the very first as a fixed principle- that possession of the Atlantic coast conferred upon the possessor the right to the inland country – stretching indefinitely westward”. This an interesting piece of history where an antique map was used in argument. Condition is good with some light foxing.
