(West) Map of the Oregon Territory By The U.S. Ex. Ex..., Gallatin/ Wilkes, 1846 Wilkes map was a substantial improvement over Hood's map of the Oregon Territory. Wheat was to call the map "quite extraordinary" although it is based largely on secondary sources. In fact a printed note in the body of the map states, "The Northern part of this map contains the latest information of the Hudson Bay Company, and the Eastern part, that of Lieut. Fremont". This instance of the map is found in the front of Albert Gallatin's "Oregon Question". Gallatin's text is an early argument for American claims to the Pacific Northwest. Gallatin uses numerous vantage points for his claims, including such as..."For the Americans, Oregon is or will be home: for England, it is but an outpost, which may afford means of annoyance, rather than be a source of real power.
