  • (Thematic - Neurological) Icones Neurologicae... Tabula XI., Adolph von Strümpell & Christfried Jakob, 1897
Adolph von Strümpell was a brilliant German internist, publisher and founding father of the field of neurology. Along with his assitant Jakob, he produced a series of large format prints in 1897 that looked at structures and relations. A remarkable pathologist and investigator of complex diseases, he was the first to describe Bechterew disease and identified key mechanisms in many previously mysterious illnesses. He was also a great instructor (Universities of Leipzig, Erlangen, Breslau, Vienna) and created the textbook on "Special Pathology and Therapy of Internal Diseases" would become the text used by medical students to underpin their introduction in the field.
In a simple view, this is a frontier moment as the human brain begins to reverse engineer an understanding of itself. Without the tools of MRI, CT scan (or even X-ray), it's sheer genius and determination that begins to unveil this complex field. Condition is good for this scarce chart, with some old misfolds, overall toning to the paper, and some unobtrusive old puncture repairs.
